“When I moved into my circa-1910 row house in Brooklyn, all the doors were original to the building except one: the door to our home office. This anonymous-looking hollow-core door was totally out of sync with the rest of the house. So after some consideration I decided to turn lemons into lemonade and just embrace the fact that the door didn’t match.
The surface of the door was in pretty bad shape, so I figured that upholstering it would be the perfect solution. If nothing else it was a low-risk experiment because a new version of this kind of door runs only about $40 at the hardware store. It seemed easy enough, and I’m happy to report it actually was.”

I’m really loving the homewares from newly formed houseware brand Shibui, a collaboration between designers Constantino Hoursoglou and Athanasios Babalis. Shibui is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of shibui, referring to a simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty.
When artists and curators come to visit the Museion, a contemporary art museum in Northern Italy, they don’t stay in a Marriott. No, those lucky souls get to stay in a residence named theAtelierhouse, designed by Italian designer Harry Thaler.
The Atelierhouse is a minimal sort of concrete space: grey slab floors; whitewashed walls (one of all windows); simple, vaguely Scandinavian-looking blonde wood furniture. But what we really like are the beds. Instead of splitting the room up into multiple sections, the sleeping furniture are modified Murphy beds–beds that fold down from the wall (or from within their own containers).
